Maldon Model Boat Lake
Promenade Park
Maldon – Essex
Directions
Follow the Brown tourist signs for Promenade Park as you enter Maldon. Once you enter the park follow the road through till you can see the river Blackwater and kids play areas in front of you, turn right and follow the road along and the lake is on your left by the riverbank. Parking is right by the lake and is £2 for 2 hours, £4 for 4 hours or £5 all day. There are park rangers enforcing this so be warned!

Facilities
What is nice is that I have checked with the Tourist office who manage the park and I am told there are no restrictions on type of model (sail, scale, electric, nitro or petrol engine models)
There is a sign by the lake that says that the Association of model Barge boats meets there on the 2nd Sunday of every month, so unless you are into Barges or just want to watch I would avoid turning up then. There is also a telephone number 01621 854477 if a large group wants to use the lake, I guess this is to stop large groups clashing over the venue, so a quick phone call could stop a lot of frustration.

The venue is oval shaped with a nice Launching jetty that runs along one bank, ideal for driving from. The path all around the edge is level with the water and the edge is concrete with wooden posts every few feet. The water is salt, straight from the river. There are buoys at either end and in the middle straightway, so there is an oval course laid out. A word of caution though they are tight into the bank, maybe 15 ft or so, so be cautious of high speed turns. In terms of water depth, 150mm around the edge and 900mm
in the centre section, so if a boat is “stuck” not so deep it could not be retrieved.
Toilets are next to the water splash park about 75 yards away as is a café.
